History of the Church of Christ at 401 Bypass

(Formerly "The Spring Lake Church of Christ")

A Brief History - Lest We Forget

The Church of Christ in Spring Lake, North Carolina came into existence in 1954. Bro. Joseph Colquitt was instrumental during these early times. One account credits Bro. Clifford Davis as assisting with the establishment in 1963. At that time there is stated to have been ten baptisms.

Bro. Colquitt was a very dedicated man in his endeavors to do Gods will in preaching the Gospel and served with heart, mind, and soul. Under his leadership, during tent meetings, several obeyed the gospel of Jesus Christ and were baptized. Bro. Colquitts mission was to establish a congregation in Spring Lake, thus his teachings led to ministry in the homes of Sister Mattie Graves and Sister Lula Vestal.

The number of members increased; therefore, the meeting place was moved to a small building on Mont Drive in Spring Lake. As the congregation continued to grow both spiritually and numerically, property was purchased at 431 Chapel Hill Road in 1967. This building was erected under the supervision of Bro. Joseph Colquitt, Bro. O. C. Williams, Bro. Amos Burgess and Bro. Alec Burgess.

Over the years, many have been instrumental in the Lords work in Spring Lake. Some even held tent meetings. Among those brethren are J. P. English, Frank McElveen, Cloys Cecil, Vance Correll and Bro. Langston.

Past ministers include Bro. Joseph Colquitt 1965-1969; Bro. Fred Twitty 1973; Bro. Lester Roberts 1973-74; Bro. Ronald Freeman 1975-76; Bro. Harry Williams 1976-78; Bro. Ernest Richardson 1977-78; and Bro. Ron Liggins 1979-84. Bro. John Davis Marshall came to us in 1985 as our first full-time minister. During his tenure, many ministries were started. A building program was begun under his leadership to purchase a site to build a sanctuary located on Country Club Drive in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He labored until August 1990 at which time he left to pursue other opportunities.

In December of 1990, God sent us another diligent laborer in the person of Bro. Paul L. R. Mason from Cleveland, Ohio by way of Hobbs, New Mexico. Bro. Mason continues to minister to the Spring Lake Church of Christ and carry on the work of those who labored before him.

The purchase for the land at 651 Country Club Drive was begun under the leadership of Bro. John Davis Marshall in July of 1990. The brethren carried through with the purchase under Bro. Masons leadership. Trustees at that time were Bro. V. C. Correll, Bro. James Brandon, Bro. Rufus Clemons, Bro. Robert Dynes, and Bro. Crid Carter. The land was paid for in the span of three years. Construction was completed in April 1999. We held our first worship service on May 2, 1999 under the leadership of Bro. Paul L. R. Mason, Minister, and Bro. Louis T. Wright, Assistant Minister.

We thank God for bringing us from Mont Drive in 1963 to Country Club Drive in 1999. Truly, through many trials and tribulations, He has blessed not only those of us present here today, but all who have passed on before us.
